Kingdom Hearts IV: Sora’s Next Journey and the Future of the Franchise
It has been over four years since Square Enix and Disney officially announced Kingdom Hearts IV at the series' 20th-anniversary event in April 2022. Since then, despite a period of quiet and a wave of rumors, the next mainline entry has been steadily advancing through development, promising to be one of the most ambitious titles in the franchise's history.
A "Lost Master Arc" and a Fresh Start for Newcomers
Kingdom Hearts IV kicks off a brand-new story arc titled the "Lost Master Arc," which follows the Dark Seeker Saga that concluded with Kingdom Hearts III and its Re:Mind DLC. The game picks up with protagonist Sora having vanished from his reality after the climactic battle against Master Xehanort.
Tetsuya Nomura, the series director, has indicated that Kingdom Hearts IV will serve as a story reset of sorts, making it a potential entry point for new players. While the overarching narrative will build on past events, the goal is to create a less intimidating starting point than the series' famously complex lore has offered before.
A New World: The Reality of Quadratum
The reveal trailer transported fans to a breathtaking, sprawling metropolis called Quadratum—a vast city inspired by the neon-lit streets of Shibuya in Tokyo. Quadratum is an expansive, realistic world unlike anything seen before in the series. In contrast to the Disney-themed worlds Sora has visited, Quadratum resembles the "real world," adding a layer of mystery to the narrative.
Classic and New Faces
The reveal trailer reintroduced classic allies like Donald Duck and Goofy, who appear in a dark location, searching for their lost friend. Returning characters Riku and Kairi play pivotal roles, with Riku using the Power of Waking to follow Sora into Quadratum and Kairi continuing her Keyblade training under Aqua.
A crucial new addition to the cast is Strelitzia, a character who first appeared in the mobile game Kingdom Hearts Union χ. In Kingdom Hearts IV, she is reintroduced as a Keyblade wielder who guides Sora through the unfamiliar realities of Quadratum, adding depth to the franchise's mythology.
Gameplay and Combat Innovations
The gameplay appears to build on the series' foundation while incorporating new ideas. The combat system is a real-time, action-packed affair, maintaining fluid combos and magical abilities. A major addition is a parkour system allowing for wall running and rooftop traversal, alongside a grappling hook mechanic for combat and navigation.
Director Tetsuya Nomura has also confirmed the return of Reaction Commands, a fan-favorite mechanic from Kingdom Hearts II that adds cinematic flair and strategic depth to battles. The combat system is built around a "scrap and build" concept, allowing players to interact with the environment in new, dynamic ways.
Unreal Engine 5 and Visual Fidelity
While the initial 2022 reveal trailer used Unreal Engine 4, the final game is being developed on the much more powerful Unreal Engine 5, promising a significant visual upgrade. New screenshots released in May 2025 showed a massive improvement in graphics, with enhanced lighting and more detailed character models. The shift from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 marks a major leap forward for the series.
Development and Release Date Status
Kingdom Hearts IV has experienced a lengthy and quiet development cycle, but director Tetsuya Nomura has repeatedly stated that development is progressing "smoothly" and "according to schedule". The September 2025 confirmation from Square Enix that production is moving steadily has reassured fans about the game's future.
Regarding the release date, official confirmation is still pending. However, a new report suggests Square Enix is currently aiming to launch the game in Q3 2027 (July-September). The long wait is further contextualized when compared to the six-year gap between the announcement of Kingdom Hearts III in 2013 and its release in 2019.
Worlds and Leaked Content
Officially, no Disney or Pixar worlds have been confirmed for Kingdom Hearts IV beyond Quadratum. However, a recent leak has sparked widespread speculation among fans. According to this leak, internal documents at Square Enix point to a potential lineup including worlds based on Moana, Zootopia, Metroville (The Incredibles), Coco, and Wreck-It Ralph. While these are currently just rumors, if true, they represent a deliberate move toward more contemporary Disney IPs.
The Road Ahead
After years of silence and waiting, Kingdom Hearts IV is gradually coming into focus as a massive and ambitious project that respects its roots while forging a bold new path. With a new story arc, a stunning new setting in Quadratum, exciting gameplay enhancements, and a move to Unreal Engine 5, the future of Sora's adventures has never looked more intriguing. Fans will have to remain patient, but the journey to Kingdom Hearts IV promises to be worth the wait.
